Community Groups in La Union

It’s important to note that while La Union is not primarily known as an indigenous region compared to some neighboring provinces like Benguet and Ifugao, it does have indigenous communities whose presence and cultural contributions are integral to the province’s identity.
Community Groups in La Union
1. Ibaloi
The Ibaloi people are an indigenous group mainly found in the Cordillera region of Northern Luzon, which includes parts of La Union. They are known for their agricultural practices, particularly terrace farming, and have a rich culture with traditions of weaving, woodcarving, and rituals. While their main areas of settlement are often considered to be in neighboring provinces like Benguet and Mountain Province, some Ibaloi communities may also be found in parts of La Union.
2. AgutaynonTingguian (Itneg)
The Tingguian people, also known as Itneg, are another indigenous group in the Cordillera region. They traditionally reside in the mountainous areas of La Union and neighboring provinces such as Abra and Ilocos Sur. The Tingguian are known for their expertise in weaving, producing intricate textiles and handicrafts. They also have unique social structures and cultural practices, such as the “sangi” or council of elders.
